🛑 How to Fix Error 5461 When Creating New ASINs
Have you encountered Error 5461 while trying to create a new product listing on Amazon? Don't worry - this common error has a straightforward solution. Let's walk through what this error means and how to resolve it.
This error appears when you attempt to create a new ASIN but don't yet have approval to list products for that specific brand, even if you have a valid GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) from GS1.
How to Resolve Error 5461?
1. Submit a Brand Approval Application
Your first step is to submit a brand approval application through Seller Central. Here's what you'll need:
- Exact brand name as it appears on the product
- Product identifier (UPC, EAN, ISBN, or JAN)
- Clear, high-quality images showing:
-> The product
-> Product packaging
-> Brand name
_> Barcode
2. For Brand Owners
If you own the brand, make sure your Brand Registry account is properly linked to your Seller Central account. This connection helps streamline the approval process.
3. Wait for Approval
After submitting your application:
- Processing typically takes up to 24 hours
- Once approved, you can begin creating new listings for the brand
- Keep checking your Seller Central notifications for updates
💡 Important Tips to Remember:
- Always check if the product already exists in Amazon's catalog before creating a new ASIN
- Double-check that your product identifiers match the GS1 database
- Save your brand approval documentation for future reference
Still Having Issues?
If you've followed these steps and are still experiencing problems:

Get to stage 3
Ba** h**d against the wall.
Either repeat the exercise and lose another hours work or just sell it elsewhere.

@Julia_Amzn we have been here before and things are still nowhere near better with the approval process.
Everything goes very well in the initial stages but when it goes to the internal team for approval you often find that you get a random reason why you can't get approval. Appealing back to Seller Support stating why they are wrong sometimes gets it resolved but more often than not you end up in a circle of messages going nowhere.
Then if you wait a few days and resubmit it again then you get no problems at all and the random reason for denial is never mentioned again and you get approved.
The internal team need more training to make sure consistent decisions are made.
On top of this Amazon have the very annoying habit of granting permission and then days/weeks/months later they randomly remove it which means you have to go through the whole circle of getting approval again.
It can be a very stressful process to be honest and needs a lot of improvement . Amazon is the only market place I sell on that every brand needs approval to create ASIN's, others do have an approval process but limit it to certain brands. It would be much better if we could be trusted to get it right, if we don't we know Amazon will probably find out and take the listing down.

Thank you for your feedback @Seller_KlbXZHzQGSDZv @Seller_d8YGbIjNqwFxn @Seller_4mvpF14wacAyg! I'm still seeing seller callouts regarding Error 5461, and I'd like to open a discussion on this topic to address potential policy gaps and blockers you're facing.

Yes, I haven't been able to solve this problem for a long time, and I still haven't. I don't even know what to do. :(

As you know Julia the information you have provided is a broken down system with no ability to communicate with anyone who can address the problem confirmed by yourself when you contacted 3 depts on my behalf which took 2 months to reply with not my job try some where else
When you apply you need to have daily contact for up to 3 months trying to get through to someone who can communicate effectively in English as most time when contacting seller support you are met with people with very limited English so they respond to a keyword they understand rather than what is being reported to them.
Even when you get approved you have one dept who tell you approval has been granted and 2 other depts telling you are not.
When you try and list after approval in a few days weeks or months you find that you are to,d to ask for approval once again this circle continues till you give up and sell your goods on other channels.
Another problem is the contradiction in policy which blocks goods ie I sell mainly authentic soccer items so on the GS1 website it is not the individual brand name {team name} that is registered but the manufacturer \leicence holder that is registered which then contradicts your policy as one dept demands the GS1 match where another demands the team name.
Further problems on any other site a brand has a single name on Amazon it has multiple variations depending on Amazons mood brand names keep changing with a dot here or there or abbreviated or only using a part of a name or a nickname leaving it almost impossible to list a product on your site which can be seen when you compare the Amazon site to competitors sites Amazon only has a small percentage of the latest goods as no one can cut through the red tape to list them while the competitor sites has all the latest releases.
You say We're Here to Help I have been reporting this problem from September 2019 hence it first started happening in the US site to date it has never been addressed.
I do not expect any help in resolving this problem nor do I expect anything said to be listened to at best I will get the standard “thank you for your feedback I will forward it on to the respective department “ where it will automatically go into the spam folder and be deleted with immediate effect ending the story.

Total nonsense! This is more control from ScAmazon. Even with valid UPC and brand authorisation, it's impossible to list new items. Reason? They want everyone doing FBA. No chance!
Seller_N0kQDKMgwda6y
try THAT with second hand books. They dont legally require brand approval anyway, as established in the courts, but its still an utter nuisance which is always cropping up, often with no solution.
I once even had the message 'there is no way for you to ever sell this book'
Seller_N0kQDKMgwda6y
Amazon is fundamentally broken in so many ways..While it keeps going and generating vast profits nobody will ever address it at all, let alone properly,
It actually needs dismantling and rebuilding , with input from users and customers, and to actually spend money on people who can and are able and willing to fix things, not just spend a week finding the vaguely relevant bit of Amazon policy to post back to you as if it was an actual answer.
Its bust. It staggers on, but for many of us its bust

Besides everything the others have said, please let me know what we have to do when the product is factory sealed ( cellophane, or other seals ). If we take de-seal the product, we cannot sell it. This happens not only with this error, but also when we want to create listings that are non-existent on Amazon.

this as been resloved its listed now thanks
