INSANE (OVER $1650) customer return shipping price

i recently sold a bicycle on amazon, FBM. It was a $250 bicycle. I shipped the bike to the customer for $50. the bike was delivered, no issues. a month later, the customer asked to return it and amazon auto authorized the return. no big deal (or so i thought). the customer returned the bike back in a GIANT INSANE OVERSIZED box, no original packaging, it was broken and in pieces in a HUGE box and amazon charged me $1650.56 for return shipping. amazon will not reimburse shipping or make an adjustment and they say it is my fault and my responsibility. the return is unreasonable and unacceptable. the bike shipped from point A to point B for $50. then it shipped back from point B to point A for $1650.56. THAT IS CORRECT, $1600 MORE to return it to me. ive been back and forth with amazon for over a month now and they will not help at all. there seller support is a JOKE. how can i have this resolved? i cant afford $1600 because amazon didnt catch an improper return. amazon should have flagged this and it should not have been able to ship it to me. this is insane and unreasonable. any advice????

So I'm guessing the box got hit with an Over Maximum UPS Surcharge for being larger than a box is supposed to be to be in their system? That's terrible, but sadly a scenario any of us can face since any buyer can just pick whatever massive box they happen to have and totally scr*w us over on the return shipping cost. Amazon used to shoulder the additional costs for these, but it hurt their bottom line too much, so now they make us sellers eat the extra cost when buyers do things like this. Since Amazon doesn't want to pay it, hence when they shifted to scr*ewing the seller over in the first place, you're probably out of luck, sadly.

@Seller_gtn741AcwXiMKthanks for sharing your issue with the Seller Forums. I'm Danika from the Community Manager team, and I can understand why this is a big issue for your business.

Do you have any case numbers for me--either with Seller Support or SAFE-T claims--so I can research this one internally?

Thanks in advance,

- Danika

I am so sorry this happened to you. At the end of the day, AMAZON does not care about its sellers. Not a smart way to run a business.

I am curious...any contact with the customer informing her or asking her why she sent the bike back in that condition?

**This is a Tip for your future Returns**

As a fellow FBM Seller my best advice - remove your inventory from PrePaid Labels. There is a template called PrePaid Label Exemptions under Returm Settings that you are privy to and the reason you want to use for the Exemption is "Item Return Costs Greater Than $100"

By creating this template - you will no longer be a victim of paying for Return Shipping Costs unless the Buyer selects "Item Defective / Wrong Item Sent / Seller's Responsibilty Return Reasons.

Your Returns will now be Buyer's Responsibility for Shipping Costs Address Labels.

This charge is set by UPS, not Amazon.com. They are simply passing it along.

You can write your senator about how UPS price gouges.

As for getting your money back, I have never seen it done. But it's worth a shot. Open a case showing that the dimensions of the box are UNDER what UPS considers over maximum limits.
