New Inbound Fees?

Why does it seem that small handmade businesses are getting pushed out? I just noticed another new fee for inbound FBA shipment. I was going to send in 100 pairs of handmade earrings ( a few of each style/design) to FBA and I see they are wanting to charge me 0.34 cents for EACH item in this FBA shipment. The text stated it started March first. This on top of the new low inventory fees and all the other fees they are charging it just seems like they are slowly trying to push/charge out handmade sellers.

Is there something I am missing here? Why are we now being charged a per item fee to send into FBA? I asked on FB and someone mentioned you could turn it off but I am unable to find anything in the settings for this.

I also asked in a business group I am in and someone mentioned if you split the shipment into 5 shipments to 5 different locations that you don't have the fee IF and only IF you send the right items to the right location. How are we suppose to know where to send what items. Example my spring earrings may sell better on the west coast BUT with them being FBA I have no idea where the customers are located that are buying them. My western earrings may sell better around TX but again how can I access this information to know?

I am really confused by all of this. Any help or advise would be welcome and appreciated!

This is the new FBA inbound placement fee. You cannot opt out of it. They announced this fee back in December (I believe) so I have worked non-stop to send in as much handmade inventory as I can for the past 2 months. I am going to convert a lot of my best sellers over to FBM in the mean time.

I was under the impression that it would be deducted when shipped, but that doesn't appear to be the situation. I absolutely cannot afford to pay these fees upfront. It used to cost me $12 to ship a box. Now it's $18 PLUS the inbound fee of $147. So almost $170 for ONE box. Tack on all the free returns customers get as they "shop" around between sellers.

And to add the cherry on top, we will start getting charged the low inventory fees next month. Just not sustainable at all.

Yup, Just sent my very last box of FBA yesterday. It cost me triple what it normally does to send it in. When it's gone it's gone, I'll be FBM. I think Amazon just wants to get rid of small stuff - handmade FBA, not enough money it it for them to mess with. It is a shame. But it is too costly at this point to make it worth my while.

we did FBA from time to time but recently started sending in more and now not sure if will continue to do so because of these crazy fees. I went from shipping a $4 box (3 pounds and about 12” by 9” by 7”) to now costing us $27. My job here is to make a profit and with fees like this it’s really cutting into my profit so I’d make more by shipping myself. My customer would pay for the shipping on fbm so my profit is on the item price after expenses which is much higher than what an FBA order is making me. I have to be smart with MY business and by the looks of it now, the smart option is to stick with FBM.

Hi @Seller_tfJYchbIZsTUy,

Dominic from Amazon here, this is the inbound placement service fee that went into effect on March 1. The FBA inbound placement service fee for standard and large bulky sized products reflects the cost of distributing inventory to fulfillment centers close to customers. The fee is effective as of March 1, 2024.

When you create a shipping plan, you can select one of the following inventory inbound placement options:

  • Minimal shipment splits: You can send your inventory to the minimal number of inbound locations, generally to a single location, and we will spread inventory across our network on your behalf, for a fee. The fee may vary by inbound location—for example, there may be higher fees for shipments sent to locations in the West versus other parts of the country.
  • Partial or Amazon-optimized shipment splits: Send your inventory to multiple inbound locations yourself for a reduced or no fee. The reduced fees will depend on the number of shipments and inbound locations that you send your inventory to. For instance, if your shipping plan qualifies, you can select the inbound placement option to send your inventory to the optimal number of inbound locations recommended by Amazon, generally four or more locations, and pay no fee. If you select the placement option in which you send your inventory to a partial number of inbound locations, generally two or three, you will pay a reduced fee.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Dominic
