Mastering ASIN Creation: A Comprehensive Guide to Resolving Error 5461

Expanding your product selection is crucial for business growth on Amazon. However you may have found yourself blocked by Error 5461. While this error can seem insurmountable, this issue can easily be solved by taking the appropriate steps.
What is error 5461?
This error means you don't have permission from Amazon to create a new ASIN under a specific brand. It's Amazon's way of ensuring brand integrity in the catalog.
What can I do to get permission to create new ASINs?
If you have appropriate documentation and images you can apply to get permission to create new ASINs for a given brand. When applying for permission to create new ASINs you’ll need to submit the following to Selling Partner Support:
- The exact brand name to be used when creating the listing.
- The product ID number - the UPC, EAN, ISBN, or JAN. The product ID is not required if you’re requesting a GTIN exemption for this brand.
- The full product title, including variations like color and size.
- The manufacturer of the product.
- The product description, including details like measurements, model or part number, and item weight. For a book, include the publisher and author name.
- Real world images of the product and packaging (This is one of the most important aspects of your application! Be sure to check out the examples on what images should look like!).
Some key things to be aware of once you’re approved:
- It can take up to 24 hours after you’re approved before you’ll be able to utilize the brand to create ASINs. If you continue to see the error after 24 hours from receiving your approval e-mail please reach back out to Selling Partner Support.
- For some brands there is a time limit when you can create ASINs. In these instances your ability to create new ASINs for the brand will be limited to 96 hours after application approval. The team will let you know if you have this limitation in your approval. If you have to create new listings after the 96 hour window, all you need to do is submit a new application.
- Ensure you’re using the exact brand name (including capitalization and spaces) to ensure you’re able to create ASINs for a brand correctly.
Issues as a Brand Owner?
Please note that you should not run into this error if you’re the Brand Owner. If you run into Error 5461 as a Brand Owner, your Brand Registry Account and Seller Account may not be correctly associated. You’ll want to ensure your Seller Account has a proper Brand Registry selling role. Please reach out to Brand Registry if you have any questions.

I am not the brand owner, but I created listings for a particular brand as recently as January 2025. I've been selling these products for 4 years. I tried creating additional listings about a week ago (July 2025) and got a 5461 error. I opened cases to resolve this issue and was told multiple times to go Brand Registry with trademark documentation. I am not the brand owner, therefore Brand Registry is not an option.
My case IDs for this issue is 18107301601 and 18107072931
Please advise on how to list.

So is it no longer possible for used book sellers to add an ASIN for a book which does not already have an ASIN? If vintage books are valuable enough, we have created ASINS with photos and accurate information. If we can no longer do this, it is quite limiting.
